Lights, Camera, Action: YOU ARE SEEN

Humans and cinema, different but somehow similar. They are both alive, complicated and reveal numerous phases and faces of life. As humans battle their own existence, they manage to pause their dramatic tedious lives to experience cinematic escapism that still imparts to the audience a taste of realism.

At its most basic core, feel-good movies offer diverting distraction and entertainment and are regarded to be one of the most sought-after film genres by all ages that allows oneself to disconnect from daily stressors, boost mental health, alleviate stress, and foster relationships. Movies before can be seen exclusively in theaters, but in this day and age, these moving pictures can now be conveniently watched on different streaming service applications anytime and anywhere.


Pride and Prejudice


One of the great romance films made to life is the adaption of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The movie revolves in the lives of 5 Bennet sisters and how their mother put pressure on them, especially on the eldest Bennet, to marry a wealthy nobleman. Then a rich nobleman came, and everything went sideways. The film depicts that love isn’t always discovered at first sight but oftentimes built slowly and steadily over time until you realize you already gave your heart.


Little Manhattan


Little Manhattan, a 2005 film starring the young Josh Hutcherson, is about a sweet story of young love and first heartbreak. The light, humorous theme of the movie will hook viewers of any age instantly. Plus, the adorable and relatable performances of young characters will make you relive the feeling of being enchanted by your first love.


Kings of Summer


Growing up is hard. But as for the frustrated teenagers, Joe and Patrick, there is nothing more difficult than to live with their annoying parents. Kings of Summer is a coming-of-age tale about three young men who decided to build a house, live primitively in the woods, and declared themselves the masters of their destiny. The urge to run away, live life wildly, and make decisions boldly will make most audiences, especially teenagers, wonder reflectively about life in its holistic sense.


The Breakfast Club


The Breakfast Club, also the film’s title, is a group of five dissimilar and clashing students of Shermer High School. The students meet and endure a Saturday detention, but despite the title each student is known for, they find themselves being vulnerable and revealing secrets to one another. Every character portrays different roles, but they are comparatively equal about something, they are all flawed and silently struggling.

CODA


She is a star but is also the only hearing member of a deaf family. CODA is a 2022 Oscar nominee film that explores the uneasy life of a timid 17-year-old Ruby who is torn between dreams and responsibilities. Not only it features her daily endeavors but displays how she bravely found and pursued her voice. The movie has a predictable beat and conflict, but its rawness drives audience to treasure family more and empathizes with physically incapacitated persons.


Captain Fantastic


Captain Fantastic is a family movie about six siblings born and raised in the wilderness and know almost nothing about the real world. As their mother suddenly passed away, they needed to step outside to society for the first time. The film showcased how parents have unorthodox methods in raising their kids. Sometimes, the strangest things led a meaningful and remarkable life.


tick, tick... BOOM!


tick, tick... BOOM! is an autobiographical film based on the life, works, and music of Jonathan Larson, an aspiring Broadway composer desperately working hard to prove that he chose the right career before turning 30. While battling all chaos thrown at him, Larson’s inspiring and exceptional journey to fulfill his purpose and to never losing hope made him an inspiration to many striving artists.


October Sky


Space is a boundless void, but for the persevered Homer, it represents his limitless optimism and unshakable faith. October Sky is a 1999 biographical drama film about putting family first, valuing friendship and chasing dreams. Against all odds, the movie shows that everyone who has a dream can go far beyond family expectations.


The context of feel-good films holds a variety of categories that the audience can choose from. These movies narrate stories about love, friendship, family, and dreams that have a distinct heartfelt way to relate with people, making them feel empowered and “seen”. Movies, however different, explore the complexity and complications of human life and leave an impactful wisdom the audience can reflect on.
