Head in the Clouds, Feet on the ground

An odd character. Most of us may envy this kind of person. Until now I am still trying to figure out how to read this student, not necessarily the leadership events and competitions he attended that he proudly brandished. Which was, surprisingly, he can still manage to do, but the very idea of him being also the cream of the crop in his class. One thing is for sure life has been so great to him. I guess he views sanity using a different eyepiece. For him, the rest must be an incomprehensible, meaningless bustle.

Daniel Terencio is a 22-year-old 4th Year BSA student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines - Manila. He was the chairperson of JPIA FINESTs of Miradlaya federation which is the pool of quizzers under the Academics Department of PUP JPIA Manila. Get to know him better and delve into his story of how he manages his college life as an accounting student.

His Academics. He has a pretty great outlook when it comes to academe. His definition of academic success is having a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. He gives more importance to things that could be acquired throughout the process rather than the end result. Having this foundation is a great way of overcoming academic challenges.

Whenever I have exams, full workloads, or competitions, the first thing I do is set and condition my mind to focus on my goals for the day”. Having this kind of mindset when you wake up in the morning makes you feel energized. Planning, breaking down tasks, allocating time, committing to plans, avoiding distractions, and relying on self-discipline are the keys for him to conquer academic challenges. Fundamentally, he assures that he consistently rests and rewards himself to stay motivated, avoid burnout, and have enough energy for the next battles.

Meanwhile, even how much you concentrate and want to keep on track, there will also be things that are beyond your control. A student is just a human, they must have balance. Having strengths and weaknesses is normal. As for him, his strengths include being able to study efficiently and effectively through the application of his study techniques. He also has improved time management and analytical skills and is more keen on details. On the other hand, his weaknesses are oral communication and fear of public speaking.

Most of the students had a hard time coping and adjusting to the online setup that has to be conducted due to the pandemic. In his stance, online learning has the potential to be as efficient and effective as in-person learning. Its success depends on the commitment of educators and students to embrace new technologies and teaching methodologies, and the availability of resources to facilitate these changes. It is a collaborative effort between all stakeholders involved in the process of learning. That most of us will agree.

Him and HIS WORKS. It is apparent that as college students, as Isko or Iska, we're already burned out for a long time. What has kept him going remains an enigma to somebody like us who’s observing him and his works from a distance. There are only two things that keep him going despite the magnitude of work on his hands — contributing to others’ success and his passion to continuously learn. Hitting two birds with one stone while achieving personal growth.

Being a chairperson of Senior FINESTs holds a huge responsibility for overseeing and selecting the representatives in various academic events. He, himself also joined quiz bee competitions, case studies, and academic conventions and craft reviewers for us, his fellow JPIAns. He believes that he’s a transformational leader as he pursues to inspire growth and influence positive change within and even outside his community. No wonder his notable thing was by helping his fellow JPIAns to instill confidence and belief in themselves.

In a very astounding accomplishment, he was recently bestowed with the prestigious title Most Outstanding JPIAn in Academics, a testament to his exceptional intellectual prowess and dedication to learning. Furthermore, his exceptional abilities and superb temperament have earned him the distinction of being named the Most Outstanding JPIAn overall, highlighting his outstanding achievements and influence within the academic community. He has set a new benchmark for excellence and serves as an inspiration to his colleagues and future generations with his amazing achievements.

Leaders are not born solemn and gloomy. He's cool. He's an extrovert who enjoys collaborating with others. To be inspired by their success stories and to learn new things from them. He was also excited to hear diverse opinions on such themes and concerns in order to broaden his horizons. This assisted him in overcoming challenging situations such as failures induced by peer pressure. When things become too crowded to handle with ten fingers. His insight is that there are things that we can control and things that we cannot; learning to accept that we are not perfect and that making errors is natural; and that failures are opportunities to learn and grow.

Thus, this thinking creates a ripple effect and impact on the community he is serving. He highly promotes an open environment and healthy culture within the organization. By showing appreciation, celebrating both small and big wins, and building good relationships with team members, we were able to build a sense of value, and individual and organizational growth. He also strongly believes that one’s triumph is the triumph of the whole organization, thereby promoting a sense of belongingness among all.

Let’s just be honest for once, we want to know if there’s more to come by measuring how successful he is in obtaining the goals of his leadership from his point of view:

“ I feel like I have already achieved a lot of my leadership goals but I also know that there are still more that I can and should accomplish. I believe that my listening skills have improved, I am able to open my mind to different opinions and learn how to accept and deliver constructive criticism. I have also built stronger connections, especially with the people I worked with. And lastly, I was able to make smarter decisions by always choosing what is right instead of what is most favorable. “

Why weren't we more proud of ourselves than he was? Right?! His greatest delight, though, comes from seeing his team members succeed and win the honors they are due. Additionally, proper stress management must be considered. He engages in activities he enjoys, such as dancing, eating comfort food, and socializing with friends.

He wished to be remembered as a leader who encouraged other leaders to step beyond their comfort zones, serve others, and inspire others to do the same for them as his tenure was coming to a conclusion.

Him by being JUST him. It is a surprise that he has not all gone mad, that he’d able to take hold of and keep his sanity quite impeccably. Managing time is one of his personal skills we may say. He works smart by identifying his priorities that most of us fail to do and spending more time on them, doing tasks as soon as they are given, and seeking help and support.

Opportunities must’ve been so open to him that he got to do a lot in his collegiate years but he regrets something that he wants to change his college life by going out of their comfort zone earlier. Instead, he should’ve taken the opportunities he wasted before to maximize the learnings he can get and better equip themselves for the future. They are hesitant to join academic competitions due to fear of failure, but realize that they are depriving themselves of endless opportunities.

Certified Public Accountant. That’s his goal. He believes that everything he does today is an investment for his future. Even though he might have experienced failures, he still keeps his faith embedded that he will be able to reap what he sows someday. Who knows when that day will come?

My friend, this is a simple piece of advice: you’re young, competent, good at anything you do, and capable, the world will not disappear the moment you decide to press that release button. I assure you that you’ll find more meaning from all these, from life in general, the moment you close your eyes and begin listening to your own heartbeat.

I know that you’re far from being satisfied in terms of what you have achieved at your age. I remember you have never been satisfied. And satisfaction has never been your goal. It was something else. You remain the oddest I know because you do not know, until now, why you’re working this hard. For what? Much less for whom? Until then, be humbled. Keep your head in the clouds, feet on the ground just like Daniel.
