Beers and Bagnet

A movie that shouts about the things we do for love "I’m Drunk, I Love You" was an independent romantic comedy film directed by JP Habac, a filmmaker of movies that received many accolades at various international film festivals. It is currently available on Netflix. The main roles are played by Paulo Avelino as Dio and Maja Salvador as Carson.

The story goes on as Carson, who has been in love with her best friend, Dio, for seven years, can’t help but hope that they have a chance together. Consequently, unable to say "no" to his request, Carson, along with Jason Ty, her gay best friend, accompanied Dio to La Union for the Music Festival. Little did she know that unexpected things might happen on their trip. But surely, they will get wasted.

The movie gets a little more painful when Pathy (yes, with an "H") enters the scene. Carson became annoyed by the fact that a girl came out of nowhere, and then she discovered that the girl was the reason they were in La Union. Pathy confirms that she was not just an old friend; she and Dio had a thing before. Carson drinks her frustration away, but it leads her to confess her suppressed feelings for seven years. They became awkward after that scene, and it makes the movie more connected to the personal experiences of the audience. It might make you angry, sad, or maybe relieved.

What makes the movie more engaging is the soundtrack. They were refreshing to hear, and they suited every scene. Most of the songs are underrated, but the lyrics will hit you right in the heart. Every song suits the scenes of the movie; it feels like the song speaks for their feelings. "Oh kay tagal kitang minahal" was one line from the song Burnout, and it really suits Carson. Moreover, the actors played their roles as if they lived those characters in real life. You can feel their emotions through their eyes. There's really not much background between Carson and Dio, but you’ll feel the connection between them. The scripts were great, and they made the conversations between them feel like a natural encounter.

The film's location will make you feel nostalgic and melancholy at the same time, especially the place where most of the movie happened—at the beach. The part where Carson just casually drinks her beer while sitting on the beach and blankly staring at the ocean makes her more vulnerable to the audience. It can make you feel like it could be the best way to unwind for a while after dealing with your problems. Moreover, the part of the movie after the credit scene will let you see how beautiful it can be if the two of them have the same level of affection for each other. I commend them for editing that shot because it would be a waste if the audience would not able to see the recordings in it. The camera recorder has been present since the beginning of the film, and it gives off a retro vibe. The colors were vibrant, and the film's characters were carefree even though there were problems ahead of them. They are living in the moment when they leave everything and just go on a road trip.

It is a typical story of a friend falling in love with his or her best friend, but it is oddly unique in the ways the story builds up. It breaks romantic comedy norms like friends turning into lovers, but you will hope with them. In the ending scene, when Carson said, "Graduate na ako," you’ll feel that she was relieved that she was finally ready to move on. I think when she rejects the butterball candy at the end, she finally realizes that she can. Additionally, it is not just about love; it also portrays the worries and uncertainties of the characters. When Dio feels like he was left behind by his classmates when Carson just smiles when she is asked about her plan after graduation, or when Jason Ty takes a leap of faith with his feelings, it was a movie that talked about the present.

The movie was reported to have a sequel way back in 2019, but it was not announced when it would air. Maybe the pandemic got in the way, which is why there is still no news about that. One theory from the fans is that it will be from Dio’s perspective. But for now, take a look at Carson’s pov and be free with her as you face your troubles head-on. It will be a process, and it will be difficult, but the day will come when you’ll be free from it.
