The Pursuit of Happyness was a film inspired by the true story of Chris Gardner, starring Will Smith. The director of the movie was Gabriele Muccino, who was an Italian film director born in Rome and handpicked by Will Smith himself. Muccino stated in an interview, "Will had to defend me as a choice to the studio; I could barely speak English and I could barely express my vision." I felt protected and that I could push my ideas even when they weren't totally conventional. "The reason I found respect and respect for my ideas was because of Will."
Long story short, Chris Gardner was a salesman for his own invention, the "bone density scanner." He invested all of his life savings in an attempt to provide a decent living for his family. Unfortunately, the sales weren’t what he expected. They struggle as the bills keep piling up. Later, he became a single father to his son as his wife left him due to the circumstances they had. It was the beginning of everything.
At the point when Chris thought that everything was going well, the climax of this movie was shown. Chris managed to sell off his bone density scanner so they could survive for a couple of months. He forgot about his taxes, and the government levied all of his assets, leaving him with only $21.33. They had to go from one place to another to spend the night. The plot goes up and down as it engulfs the life of Chris. There will be scenes like when Chris passed the interview that will make you think this is the resolution for the problem, but it isn’t. It was tiring to watch, but at the same time, you will find yourself rooting for the main character to survive and have a good life. It is the determination in Chris's eyes that will give you a hint that he could make it.
“He must have really good pants” was one of the most iconic lines of Chris Gardner from the movie, when he showed up in an interview with inappropriate clothes. These made the interviewers like him even more. This might be symbolizing something: that a person shouldn’t focus on what he lacks but improve what he already has. The scene where Chris Gardner and his son, along with the homeless in the church, are singing and praising "Lord, don’t move that mountain,” sets the mood for the movie. It could make the viewers shed tears.
The title of the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, also has a meaning. Chris Gardner states that the “Y” in "happyness" represents “you” pursuing what makes you happy. This interpretation of the movie can be related to the scene when Chris told his son that he shouldn’t let anybody stop him, not even his own father. On the other hand, Will Smith (as Chris Gardner) and Jaden Smith (as Chris Gardner’s son) have shown the bond between father and son, and it has become really realistic to watch them as they are real-life father and son.
Gray was the primary color used in the film. It exemplifies the film's minimalism, which lays a greater emphasis on the character's emotions. Although color and lighting changes are rarely used, when they are, they have a profound impact on the mood of the film. Many of the film's settings feature transparent or white backdrops, which could represent Chris's chance to begin a new chapter in his life. Chris is frequently depicted in a hurry. The motion being highlighted emphasizes the importance and urgency of Chris's struggle and efforts.
The movie was portrayed in a narrative style, which enabled the viewers to watch the movie without being confused about what was currently happening. The part where the government credited the taxes due on the bank account without notice was clear because of the claim made by Chris that he totally forgot about paying taxes. The movie shows that optimism is a good thing, especially when it comes with faith and perseverance. This is reflected when Chris and his son pretend that the last bone density scanner was a time machine that could get them to the place they wanted. Moreover, in order to avoid sleeping again in the public bathroom, Chris did not drink water or hang up the telephone to save time so that he could go out from work to have enough time to fetch his son and line up at the shelter for free food and a place to stay for the night.
Riding the bus, being stupid, money, an internship, paying taxes, and lastly, his happiness portrays the journey of Chris to happiness—how he pursued something. These were Chris' struggles and efforts. You'll get these parts eventually after creating your own journey to your own happiness. You know you'll fight for it, and you will have a good fight.
This movie has life; it will make you feel things when you watch it. You'll feel sad, angry, hopeless, happy, motivated, and inspired. I totally recommend this movie if you want to find your will to live or you want to feel the passion within you again, or maybe you just want to have a good cry. This movie will make you look back and say, "I have come a long way." But if you have decided to watch this movie right now, be ready to shed some tears.
